| Joan sold her Lemans and purchased a 2001 Pontiac Grand Am in April 2006. The steering on the Grand Am is too stiff, tight, requiring too high of human effort to turn the wheel. | Mercy, if you had her fingers you'd be complaining too. This is a small framed lady who will develop severe crippling arthritic joints in her hands, numbness, tingling, and pain in her fingers..usually starting with the small, ring, and middle fingers of her dominant driving hand. It will first be diagnosed as carpal tunnel. A carpal tunnel operation and therapy won't help..so the next operation will be diagnosed as pressure on a disc in her neck. The operation will be performed through the front of her neck. She will never be the same again. She will develop a sore shoulder, that will become more restricting in movement and more painful, until after a couple months it will just hang there, unable to be used. An operation will leave her with permanent restrictions in movement and chronic pain. She will think it happed from opening her file cabinet, or as one person said, getting it struck between two elevators doors. Often the sore shoulder leads to emergency room visits for a heart attack that didn't happen. Lumpiness in her back will radiate pain to the front of her chest, also prompting a visit to the ER thinking a heart attack is present. She will develop chronic back pain in the lower L-4 and L-5 (lumbar region). More than likely she will remember a childhood injury that has come back. She won't know or even think that the "high effort" steering is the cause. Like me, the automobile was beyond approach. She won't realize that when her body generates and delivers the forces necessary to overcome the resistance of the steering wheel to move, that the feet, ankles, knees, and hips become taunt, the weight of the torso about the seat belt is thrown into the effort...thus resulting in a mini-trauma from the feet to the finger tips. After reading this you will see some humor, insanity, and sadness you will never forget. All of us are guilty of not thinking outside of the tunnel vision we have which is always instilled in our innocent young, while destroying their beautiful curiosity. Only when people think differently does change happen. Read this and you decide for yourself if you have tunnel vision. Mr. Richard Wagoner identifies the staggering increased health costs, from 633 Million (1994), 5.3 Billion (05). Health care medical cost MUST be lowered. The auto industry is losing their competitive edge because of $1,500 a vehicle devoted to health care costs. Despite an agreement with the UAW to reduce its annual health care costs by $1 billion, Wagoner said the automaker "continues to incur unsustainable health care costs." Senator Debbie Stabenow proposed reforming health care; to reduce the Big 3 health care problem which would make employees pay even more. Detroit News 7-13/14-06. What is causing such an horrendous increase in medical costs in our country? Why are so many people having back, neck, shoulder, carpal tunnel operations, suffering with chronic physical pain, developing so much arthritic and rheumatoid arthritis? Developing crippling fingers? How come China, Japan, Russia and other countries are not having these problems as we are? What is the common denominator for all these medical problems? What has changed since the mid 1980's to cause this? Neither Mr. Wagoner, or Mr. Gettelfinger realize the main problem causing the health problems in our country, that exceed all other nations, is our driving. The auto industry has created an illusion of fashionable mobility. Someone said "take charge of your car," "feel the road," and those commercials resulted in the elimination of the simple, effortless, easy, one-finger steering systems, and replacement with the silent arthritic causing, mini-damaging, high effort-stiff, tight, heavy steering system on todays vehicles. The root cause of the problem is Simply put: The automotive industry produces vehicles that exceed the strength of the soft tissues and skeletal system of our body, through the designed "high effort steering" systems on todays cars. More physical effort is required than the older "one finger" steering systems of the 60's, 70's, and early 80's. What damaging physical process is developed in over coming the "high effort' resistance steering system? In making a steering course correction, the following happens within 4/10's of a second. Our feet, ankles, knees, hips snap to attention (become rigid. Our body throws the weight of our upper torso (above the seat belt) into delivering the force to overcome what it senses as a wall of resistance which is preventing the steering wheel to turn. Consciously, the steering resistance doesn't seem like a problem to drivers. Drivers appear to even enjoy the stiffness, (until they develop physical pains) but to our skeletal joints and soft disc in our body it is silently inflicting destructive damaging forces. The 4/10's of a second response time generates a quick delivery of forces that result in a sudden jolting mini-shock load. These mini-shock loads generate a force that exceeds the Material Creep Force Tolerance Level of the bone mass, thus resulting in elongation of the molecular bonding of the cells,and accumulation in the damaging shock loads and eventual disc failure, shoulder trauma injuries, carpal tunnel, and more as shown on our web site. Example of some symptoms from these damaging jolting forces are: + lumpiness in the back between shoulder blades, which becomes painful and aching, and radiates through the chest feeling like a heart attack, prompting a trip to the hospital only to discover your not having a heart attack + shoulder pain that radiates in your arm, also prompting a trip to the ER with a belief of a heart attack, + neck with resulting headaches blamed on sinus or migraine, tingling in fingers, numbness, your told because of carpal tunnel, only to find that the disc in the neck was/is infringed on (ruptured-collapsed) and an operation through the front of the throat had to be done. + degenerative back disease (a catch all). Hip, knee, elbow, wrist pain and much more chronic physical pain. The finger pointing party The automotive industry is complaining of the high per vehicle medical costs, is seeking medical payment relief from congress, their unfair advantage with foreign auto producers, the UAW is relinquishing gains, and even Bush changed the bankruptcy laws so people have to pay their medical expenses rather then seek relief. Finger pointing not enough exercise, obesity, a whole lot of noise being made, and politicians singing, dancing, and waving the flag at election time but medical costs continue to soar while we blame everyone and everything, while pain clinics over flow with patients getting injections in their backs, necks, shoulders, wrists, etc (#1). Physical therapy centers have seen a 400% increase in PT for backs, shoulders, necks, etc.( #2). (#1) Henry Ford Hospital, Detroit, Mi. 12-07, (#2) VA Medical Center, Saginaw, Michigan 06 The simple solution to all this insanity, madness can be eliminated by: "believe it or not" turning the steering effort back to the "low effort" one-finger steering and the body will not deteriorate while driving. Recognize that the skeletal system has a Material Creep Threshold relative to bone calcification. Do You have tunnel vision? Let us hope if you get nothing out of our research, that you will pay attention to preventing your toddlers from coloring (at 3-years-old they develop finger deformities from these mini-trauma shock loads), using computers, or video gaming. What would be a good age? That's not known yet. When the video gaming industry keeps their influence away from Joe Lieberman and congress, and when congress ever does pass the CAMRA Act-Senate bill S.948...then we will find out the ages for each. Until then call your senator asking they pass S.948-CAMRA Act when they return from the Christmas holidays and provide emergency funding for the study to begin. Interesting...their injuries are not nearly as severe as we see in American drivers or American adults with damage carried over from video gaming injuries. Our guess is these gentlemen did not play video gaming as much as our teenagers and they haven't conducted a lot of driving with stiff, heavy, or hard turning steering systems like the Chevrolet Impala, Toyota, Nissan, etc. |

| Two lovely talented ladies winning the Gold Medal again. My love to both of them and all the participants in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. Right: Unfortunately, I can see that Kerri and Misty both drive vehicles with "high effort" steering systems. With the information I have read, I suspect that Kerri is wearing the black shoulder brace (white arrows) due to the mini-shock loads generated in driving such a vehicle. The shoulder is only one of the first problems to develop. Sadly, her continued driving with result in loss of physical ability to continue the games. Misty...her fingers are curved, bent, and twisted like Kerri's. These Injuries will continue to develop and prevent their successful playing. Top Right: Look closely at both hands. | To prevent permanent musculoskeletal injuries, if you can not turn your steering wheel effortlessly with your small finger (at any speed) Tell your manufacturer to reduce the steering effort to "Zero." Unless this is done permanent ligament, tendon, disc, skeletal, and nerve damage will continue to silently develop with each movement of the stiff steering vehicle. The World-Wide Automotive Industry (GM, Nissan, VW, Toyota, Honda, Saturn, Mercedes, etc.) are aware of the damage caused by stiff "high effort" steering systems on vehicles. My testing of vehicles has identified the Ford Crown Victoria, or the Mercury Grand Marquis to be the lowest effort steering available. However, they development of L-4, L-5 disc compressions injuries, curved, bent, and twisted fingers, but it takes longer to happen. My 6-years of testing has not found one safe vehicle that allows safe delivery of the awkward torsional forces required to overcome the resistence of the "high effort" steering systems. Mike Tomich |
